Brushing Away Downtime: How Motorised Brush Cleaners Revolutionise Conveyor Maintenance

Introduction

In the fast-paced world of bulk material handling, conveyor systems are the lifeblood of operations. Yet, without proper maintenance, they can become a source of significant downtime and increased costs. One of the most effective solutions to this problem is the implementation of motorised brush cleaners. These devices not only enhance the cleanliness of conveyor belts but also contribute to the overall efficiency and longevity of the system.

The Challenge: Material Carryback and Spillage

Material carryback occurs when fine particles adhere to the conveyor belt and are carried back to the return side, leading to spillage and accumulation on return rollers. This not only causes blockages but also accelerates wear and tear on the system components. Traditional cleaning methods often fall short in addressing this issue, leading to increased maintenance efforts and operational disruptions.

The Solution: Hoverdale’s Motorised Brush Cleaners

Hoverdale’s motorised brush cleaners offer a robust solution to the challenges posed by material carryback. Constructed from durable stainless steel, these cleaners are designed to withstand harsh operating conditions and provide consistent performance. Key features include:

  • Auto-adjusting Brushes: The brushes automatically adjust as they wear, maintaining effective cleaning contact with the conveyor belt at all times.
  • Quick-Release Cartridge System: Allows for fast and easy brush changes, reducing maintenance downtime.
  • Versatility: Suitable for various belt types, including flat, chevron, and flighted belts, with brush diameters ranging from 200mm to 600mm.
  • Enhanced Durability: Stainless steel construction ensures resistance to corrosion and extends the lifespan of the cleaner.

Real-World Application: Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs)

A notable application of Hoverdale’s motorised brush cleaners is in Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs). These facilities often deal with chevron and cleated conveyor belts that are challenging to clean with conventional methods. By installing Hoverdale’s motorised brush cleaners, one MRF operator reported:

  • Elimination of Carryback: Significantly reduced material carryback, leading to cleaner return rollers.
  • Increased Uptime: Reduced the frequency of maintenance interventions, leading to higher operational availability.
  • Cost Savings: Saved approximately 50 man-hours per week previously spent on manual cleaning efforts.

Actionable Tips

  1. Regular Inspection: Periodically check the condition of the brushes and replace them as needed to maintain optimal performance.
  2. Proper Adjustment: Ensure that the brushes are correctly adjusted to the belt’s surface to maximize cleaning efficiency.
  3. Training Personnel: Educate maintenance staff on the benefits and operation of motorised brush cleaners to ensure effective use.
  4. Integration with Other Systems: Consider combining motorised brush cleaners with other conveyor belt cleaning solutions for comprehensive maintenance.
