Troubleshooting Common Conveyor Problems

Introduction

Even the best-designed conveyor systems encounter issues. Recognising early warning signs and understanding common conveyor problems can prevent small issues from becoming expensive failures. This article provides a simple guide to common faults and how to fix them.

1. Belt Mistracking

Symptoms: Belt drifts to one side, uneven wear on pulleys.

Causes:

  • Misaligned pulleys or frames
  • Build-up under rollers
  • Uneven load distribution

Fixes:

  • Clean components and check alignment
  • Use tracking idlers and training rollers
  • Centre the load on the belt

2. Material Spillage

Symptoms: Excessive debris under the conveyor, high clean-up times.

Causes:

  • Worn skirting
  • Inadequate impact beds
  • Mistracked belt

Fixes:

  • Install or adjust skirting systems
  • Use proper impact beds at load zones

3. Belt Slippage

Symptoms: Belt hesitates or slips at drive pulley.

Causes:

  • Insufficient tension
  • Worn pulleys
  • Contaminated belt surface

Fixes:

  • Adjust tensioning systems
  • Replace or re-coat pulleys
  • Clean belt with scraper systems

4. Excessive Wear

Symptoms: Frayed edges, damaged covers, short belt lifespan.

Causes:

  • Abrasive materials
  • Improper scraper pressure
  • Incompatible belt type

Fixes:

  • Use toughflex wear-resistant belts
  • Choose correct belt compound for application
