The European Union set itself a goal that at least 50 per cent of all plastic packaging waste will be recycled by 2025 and 55 per cent by 2030, as part of its plastics strategy adopted in 2018. The executive arm of the EU wants to ensure all plastic packaging on the market will be either reusable or recyclable by 2030, according to Reuters.

But EU countries are still incinerating more than they recycle, despite the European Commission vowing to make climate change a priority, releasing vast quantities of CO2 and other pollutants.

The independent auditor of the review, Samo Jereb, said that reversing the trend, especially during the pandemic, is a ‘daunting challenge’.

“By resuscitating single-use habits amid sanitary concerns, the COVID pandemic shows that plastics will continue to be a mainstay of our economies, but also an ever-growing environmental threat,” Jereb added.

Approximately a third of the plastic packaging sent for recycling by the EU is processed outside of the bloc, but the export rules being implemented in 2021 means that most plastic packaging shipments will be assimilated to hazardous waste and be banned.

The auditors warned that the lack of capacity to treat plastic packaging within the bloc will increase the risk of illegal disposal, and that stricter rules will cause the EU’s reported average plastic packaging recycling rate to drop, from 41 per cent currently to between 29 per cent and 32 per cent.

According to the EU, global plastic production has increased from 1.5 million tons in 1950 to 322 million tons in 2015. Half of all the plastic on earth was produced since 2005.
